Pond Pumps are far simpler than they often seem to be at first glance because there are a lot of options out there. The first step is to work out what type of pump you need.
While most pumps will be able to work in a variety of applications, you’re best to get one that is suited to the job. Broken down as simply as possible, Pond Pumps can really be classed into 2 types; Feature Pumps & Filter or Circulation Pumps.
Feature Pumps
These pumps are designed to be used in multiple applications, from spillways to fountains, but ultimately their major purpose is providing flow for water features. Although these pumps would in many case provide adequate flow for a Pond Filter, the major characteristic of these pumps is that they are designed to pump water vertically. This is specified on each pump model as the Head Height (H).
Filter or Circulation Pumps
These pumps are primarily designed to be used for Pond Filters and water Circulation. Filter Pumps, like all Pond Pumps, will have a specified Head Height, but the major characteristic here is Flow (Q). The physical shape is typically flatter and rounder as they contain a larger inlet to provide maximum water intake for maximum flow output.
And Everything In Between…
As mentioned up the top, there are a lot of options out there, the key thing is to match the Pump Output with the Flow Requirements (Q) at the Head Height (H) you require.
Extra Features
But on top of just flow & head height, there are pond pumps out there to suit a whole range of specific needs:
