FAQs
The main difference you need to worry about is their output current. Each brand of lighting has their own specified power compatibility, typically our transformers are 12v or 24v AC & our drivers are 12v DC. So if you’ve got existing lights or globes or are researching, it’s very important to check what power supply they are compatible with before you buy a power supply.
The size of your transformer/driver depends on the total load (wattage) of the lights on your circuit. Eg: If you are using 8 x Spotlights with 5W LED Globes, you’re using 40W. You need a driver that is rated to handle the total of 40W. However, keep in mind that it’s important not to cut it too fine with matching the wattage to the capacity of the driver, if you undersize you will find the farthest lights will flicker. For this reason we recommend you allow for at least an extra 30%.
An LED driver is a device that regulates the power supply to LED lights, converting high-voltage AC power to low-voltage DC power suitable for LEDs. It ensures a stable current, preventing flickering or damage to the lights. LED drivers are essential for efficient performance, extending the lifespan of LED lighting and providing consistent, safe illumination.
An LED driver regulates current to LED lights, converting AC to DC power and ensuring consistent, stable performance. A transformer, on the other hand, reduces voltage from mains power (240V) to a lower voltage, like 12V or 24V, without regulating current. LED drivers are specific to LEDs, while transformers support various low-voltage devices, including LEDs with compatible drivers.
To choose the right LED driver, consider the following:
- Voltage — Match the driver’s output voltage (e.g., 12V or 24V) to your LED lights (specified by the manufacturer).
- Current — Ensure the driver supports the required current (constant current or constant voltage).
- Wattage — Choose a driver with a capacity 20-30% higher than your LEDs’ total wattage.
- Environment — Select weatherproof options for outdoor use.
Our range of LED drivers includes:
- 12V indoor LED strip drivers — Perfect for powering indoor LED strip lighting with stable voltage for smooth performance.
- 12V DC weatherproof LED drivers — Designed for outdoor use, these drivers are durable and resistant to harsh weather conditions, ensuring reliable power for garden and landscape lighting.
Both provide efficient and safe operations tailored to specific environments.
Yes, most are compatible with garden lighting smart controllers and timers for automated schedules and remote control.
