Wi-Fi Irrigation Controllers, Decoder Controllers, Commercial Irrigation Controllers FAQs

An irrigation system controller with Wi-Fi capability connects to your home’s Wi-Fi network, allowing you to control your irrigation remotely using a smartphone, tablet or computer. It extends the capability of a typical irrigation controller interface and uses a dedicated app to program watering schedules, adjust run times and monitor water usage. Some advanced models even integrate with smart home systems and utilise weather data to optimise watering schedules for efficiency and conservation.

In most cases, yes! Irrigation controllers with Wi-Fi are designed to replace traditional controllers, utilising your system’s existing wiring and valves. Simply disconnect your old controller and install the new Wi-Fi controller in its place. You’ll then connect the existing wires to the corresponding terminals on the new controller. However, it’s always a good idea to check the compatibility of the new controller with your system’s voltage and number of zones. Please reach out to our experts for personalised assistance.

Yes, you’ll typically need to download the manufacturer’s specific app to control your Wi-Fi irrigation controller. When choosing a controller, check the app store reviews to ensure the app is user-friendly and reliable. Some controllers may also offer web-based interfaces for control through your computer.

Installing a Wi-Fi irrigation controller is generally straightforward, especially if replacing an existing controller. However, if you’re unsure or uncomfortable working with electrical wiring, it’s always best to consult a qualified electrician or irrigation professional. Request a quote from us should you prefer to have our experts install your Wi-Fi irrigation controller.

Wi-Fi irrigation controllers offer convenience, water savings, and control from your smartphone. They often use weather data to automatically adjust watering schedules, helping you avoid overwatering and making garden management easier and more efficient. And when installed with a Flow Sensor alert you upon system faults & prevent flooding in breakage events!

Many Wi-Fi controllers are designed for DIY installation and come with clear instructions. If you’re comfortable wiring and setting up devices, you can install it yourself. For more complex systems or commercial setups, professional installation may be recommended.

Most Wi-Fi controllers work with standard 24V irrigation valves and are typically cross-compatible with the existing systems found in Australian homes and commercial properties. Check the product specifications or ask our team for advice on compatibility with your setup.

Key features to look for are an easy to use app, integration with weather data, compatibility with smart home systems, robust build quality (particularly for Australian conditions), flow sensor capability, and wifi signal sensitivity. Many models also offer notifications and detailed watering history.

Definitely. Many Wi-Fi irrigation controllers are designed for scalability, supporting multiple zones and advanced scheduling. They’re ideal for property managers, landscapers, and councils who need to control several areas from a single platform.

Yes! Wi-Fi irrigation controllers will continue to run their last programmed schedule even if the internet connection drops. However, remote access and weather-based adjustments may be unavailable until the connection is restored.

Yes, all Wi-Fi controllers purchased from SunshowerOnline come with manufacturer warranties and access to our expert support team. We can help with installation, troubleshooting, and ongoing advice to ensure your system runs smoothly.

In rare applications, like on a wall under a well covered patio where the space is 100% dry all the time & not exposed to the sun, an indoor controller will continue to operate without issue. But if you’re not sure, we recommend installing an outdoor model. If something does go wrong with your controller due to water damage or the LCD screen failing from sun exposure, the warranty is voided so it’s not worth the risk.

Yes, irrigation controllers typically have a manual function, this will allow you to both operate all zones, or each one individually as you please.

Domestic irrigation controllers will always operate zones one at a time. Even if you try to operate 2 to come on at the same time, the controller will automatically delay the operation of the second zone until after the first zone has finished running.

In some states a rain sensor is mandatory, but regardless it’s something you should include in your irrigation system. Having your system turn on in the middle of a day of rain is not only embarrassing, it’s a terrible waste of water & the overwatering is bad for your garden!

The easiest irrigation controller to program has a simple interface, that’s easy to manage. And the world’s best was developed right here in Melbourne, Australia! Hunter’s Hydrawise range offers Wi-Fi capabilities and a user-friendly app that simplifies programming all from a smartphone. Tap timers and basic residential controllers, offer an even simpler solution without all the bells and whistles.

To choose the right irrigation controller, consider the size of your landscape, the number of zones you need to manage, your water source and whether you prefer a Wi-Fi, solar-powered or battery-operated model. For personalised advice and to find the best fit for your system, try our free instant quote or request a quote from our design department.

An irrigation controller, also known as a sprinkler timer, is an automated device that manages when and how long your irrigation system runs. By programming watering schedules and durations, it helps you efficiently water your garden or landscape, saving time and reducing water waste.

Many irrigation controllers are designed for easy DIY installation, especially for home gardens. However, more complex systems with multiple zones or integration with weather sensors may benefit from professional setup. We’re all for helping homeowners install themselves, so we provide detailed guides and support for all skill levels.

Yes, irrigation controllers we stock are compatible with standard 24V AC irrigation valves and systems commonly used in Australia. If you’re unsure about compatibility, our team can help you choose the right controller for your existing setup.

Fully installed by a professional, a domestic irrigation system will come out to about $1000 per zone. And as a DIY project, it can look more like $300 per zone! But of course that’s a very rough estimate, each system is different and there are a lot of factors to consider. Thankfully, we have the only tool around that INSTANTLY give an accurate estimate for your. Try our INSTANT Irrigation Quote Tool here!

A decoder controller is an advanced irrigation controller that communicates with multiple valve decoders over a two-wire path, enabling efficient management of large, multi-zone irrigation systems.

Decoder controllers are ideal for councils, sports grounds, commercial landscapes, golf courses, and any large property where scalable, centralised irrigation management is needed.

Typically no. Stick with matching Brands & their compatible models. In the event where you’re forced to consider a mismatch, check compatibility between your equipment and decoder models & seek advice from our expert team.

Each decoder is assigned a unique address, which you input into the controller. This lets you control each valve individually from the central unit.

Use a decoder line tester, check for short circuits, ensure all addresses are unique, and verify that all connections are weatherproof and corrosion-free.

You would consider a decoder controller over a traditional multi-core system if you are managing a large or complex irrigation project—such as a sports field, commercial landscape, golf course, or council site—where efficiency, scalability, and simplified wiring are important.

A decoder system uses electronic modules (decoders) to control multiple irrigation valves over a two-wire path, enabling efficient and scalable irrigation management for large or complex sites.

Decoder systems are ideal for councils, sports fields, golf courses, commercial landscapes, and large residential projects needing flexible zone control and reduced wiring complexity.

Decoder systems reduce cable requirements, simplify installation and expansion, lower costs for large installations, and provide centralised, reliable valve control.

Typically no, a decoder controller is specifically manufactured for 2-wire decoder irrigation systems. So it’s a usually case of choosing one method or the other. However, hybrid systems do exist that incorporate both.

A two-wire cable is run from the controller, with decoders installed at each valve location. Each decoder is programmed with a unique address to operate its assigned valve.

Check for wire breaks, damaged insulation, or water ingress. Use a decoder system tester to identify faults, and ensure all decoders are securely connected and programmed.

All decoder systems come with manufacturer warranties and expert support from our team for system design, installation, programming, and troubleshooting.
