Buying Guide: Drip Tube

Drip Irrigation is an excellent way to effectively and evenly water your lawns and gardens. A properly designed and installed Drip Irrigation System will provide an even coverage of water across an area with minimum wastage. But there’s a few different types to consider when purchasing.

Non-Pressure Compensating Drip Tube

This is the most basic form of Drip Tube, it’s an excellent choice for flat areas and is the typically the least expensive option. In undulating areas it is not the ideal option, it is likely to overwater low areas and under water high spots.

Pressure Compensating Drip Tube

Whether on level ground or not, but particularly on multi-level or sloped landscapes, this Drip Tube is the way to go. With Integrated Pressure Compensating Drippers, each will let out the same amount of water regardless of it’s distance from the water supply or elevation. It’s our preferred choice for Garden Drip Irrigation Systems.

Drip Tube for Under Lawns

If thinking Under Lawn Drip Irrigation, make sure you find one that is specified for that use. The main feature of drip tube for under lawns is their Anti-Root Intrusion Protection. Under Lawn Drip Tubes with this built in are typically more expensive but if a drip tube doesn’t have this feature, over time the roots will grow towards and into each dripper, blocking them up.

Micro Drip Tube

This drip tube is perfect small areas like pots, vegetable patches, or grasses between pavers. Micro Drip Tube is less obtrusive but it typically has a short maximum run length because of the smaller pipe size. If it’s run too far, even watering might be compromised. So it’s best in small, tight areas.

Combining Types of Drip Tube? Watch Your Flow Rates!

You can combine your types of drip tube, but be mindful of the specified flow rate on each. It may not seem like much, but a 3lph drip tube will use 50% more water than a 2lph drip tube. Over the course of 30mins, with a dripper every 30cms, that can mean floods in one section of the garden and deserts in another. So make sure you check!
